Strategies for Living
Use an e-ticket for flying if you are a disabled traveler

In this electronic age, isn't it wonderful how you can now shop for and purchase airline tickets online. The advantages of an e-ticket are many, especially for someone with a disability or special needs:

  • With an e-ticket, an electronic confirmation number secures your seat. Perfect for the forgetful traveler, since you can't lose an e-ticket or leave it at home.
  • It will not get "lost in the mail," resulting in a hefty replacement fee.
  • There is no ticketing fee, in fact most airlines offer incentives, such as Web-only deals, to book on line.
  • You can check into your flight and print your boarding pass from home, your hotel, or an airport self-service kiosk. No more waiting in long lines at the ticket counter.
  • If you have a smartphone, you receive your confirmation and boarding pass electronically. Many airlines let you scan your phone right at the gate, and you can sign up for flight alerts, informing you of any gate changes or delays.

I suggest you still print out your receipt, as proof of purchase just in case the system "goes down," and if you tend to forget or get confused in large unfamiliar places, print out your itinerary as well. Last, but not least, remember to have your personal identification card, driver's license, passport or other photo ID ready to show the security and gate personnel.

Happy travels.
