Recycle or donate old cell phones

Last week, my husband and I renewed our cell phone contract and we chose new cell phones. Then the question came up of what to do with our old ones. One did not work anymore so we dropped it in the recycle box at the store. However one was perfectly good so we kept it. Why? Because once before I dropped my phone and destroyed it forcing me to purchase a new phone (we did not purchase cell phone insurance) and if I had had my old phone, they could have reprogrammed it to work on our new contract. If you do not need an extra phone, think locally with your cell phone recycling. Domestic abuse agencies collect old cell phones and either recycle them, raising money for their programs, or programming them to call 911 and distribute them to their clients, increasing their safety and sense of security. Locally DAIS (Domestic Abuse Intervention Services) has collection boxes at three local Ancora coffee shops (University Ave., Monroe St., and King St.) For more information, contact Samantha at 608-251-1237. If you live outside the Madison or Dane County area, additional collection sites may be found at www.wirelessfoundation.org/CalltoProtect.
